Volkswagen Unveils ChatGPT Feature in Cars at CES 2024

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2024 witnessed a meaningful announcement from Volkswagen, as they introduced the integration of ChatGPT, an advanced AI chatbot, into their vehicles. This integration, a first among volume manufacturers, marks a significant step in automotive technology, enhancing the capabilities of Volkswagen’s IDA voice assistant.

Integration of ChatGPT with IDA Voice Assistant

Volkswagen’s new feature, underpinned by Cerence Chat Pro technology from Cerence Inc., provides a unique, automotive-grade integration of ChatGPT. Starting in the second quarter of 2024, this feature will be standard in many of Volkswagen’s production vehicles, including the ID.7, ID.4, ID.5, ID.3, the all-new Tiguan, Passat, and the new Golf. ChatGPT will work in tandem with the latest generation of Volkswagen’s infotainment systems, delivering an array of new capabilities. These include control over infotainment, navigation, air conditioning, and the ability to answer general knowledge questions.

User Experience and Data Security

For drivers, the transition to this new technology is seamless. There is no need for new accounts, apps, or activation procedures. The existing voice command, "Hello IDA," or a press of the steering wheel button activates the system. IDA determines the nature of the request, choosing between vehicle functions, destination searches, and temperature adjustments. If the system cannot fulfill the request, it is anonymously forwarded to the AI, maintaining the familiar Volkswagen voice interaction. Importantly, ChatGPT does not access vehicle data, and all questions and answers are immediately deleted, ensuring maximum data protection.

Kai Grünitz, Board Member for Technical Development at Volkswagen, emphasized the brand's commitment to democratizing technology and innovation. The introduction of ChatGPT aligns with Volkswagen's ethos of making advanced technology accessible. Meanwhile, Stefan Ortmanns, CEO of Cerence, highlighted the company's pride in their partnership with Volkswagen. He stressed the importance of leveraging generative AI and large language models to enhance post-purchase experiences for customers.

In summary, Volkswagen’s integration of ChatGPT into its vehicles represents an advancement in automotive technology. Offering ease of use, enhanced capabilities, and stringent data protection, this feature stands to significantly enhance the driving experience in Volkswagen models. As the first volume manufacturer to standardize this technology, Volkswagen continues to lead in bringing innovative solutions to its customers.
